Yes, I'm using opensuse 11.1 with gnome gui and I'm running gedit from within
a gnome-terminal.

Aside from using "su -", what exactly was the cause of the error messages
and what do they mean?

Which openSUSE version are you using?

Are you doing that inside gnome?

Try using "su -" instead.
