I have a big problem with an older dell latitude laptop..
The graphics card is radeon mobility 7500 = very old one.
It seems that it is not supported by the ati proprietary drivers.
I think you've answered your question and identified your problem
right there. ATI has explicitly dropped support for older video cards
(in Linux, and in Windows, although there is a Windows Legacy still
driver available). The latest ATI drivers are pretty much guaranteed
*not* to work with older ATI cards in my experience.
On top of that ATI has explicitly *not* provided any Linux drivers
(that I've ever seen) that supported the Mobility 7500. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon#Linux and the bottom section at
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ATI_Mobility_Radeon_7500
Anyway I wanted to try it out and made everything according to
the instructions in
http://en.opensuse.org/Ati
The instructions work, but on for supported video cards.. the ones ATI
has deemed worthy of still supporting.
All in all, not convincing at all.. I believed that older hardware should
work with linux, but instead, my system gets "deadlocked" by the instructions
given in the opensuse web page!
Your system will work just fine if you use the opensource Radeon
driver - what you had before you started tinkering. The instructions
you followed on the openSUSE Wiki are not intended to be used for your
video card... as you said, it's not supported by the ATI proprietary
drivers.
