[opensuse] 11.2 What setting makes 'ls -al' sort with directories first (before files in the listing) and which conf file?

Guys,
I would like to have ls -al default to listing all the directories first
before the files. (the 11.2 default is just alphabetically with files and
directories mixed)
What controls this behavior? ...and... where is the proper place to make the
change (default for all users)?
