Yet, the same also occurred on CRT monitors and separate LCD (maker:
EIZO, very expensive monitors)

With an lcd monitor/laptop you should really use it with its native
resolution, otherwise I think you *will* get sub-optimal fonts. I looked
quickly on the web, and from what I can tell the nx9005 can have either
1400x1050 or 1024x768 as its native resolution, so you may be ok here, but
you should be sure.

I've never come across or seen mentioned an LCD with more than one native
resolution, though most newer ones at least do _support_ lower modes, almost
always with 1024x768 among them, even when the display is a widescreen.

The other thing that might help is to bump up the display resolution of 86
dpi. When there was an /etc/X11/xorg.conf, you could add a line like

Option "DPI" "96x96"

That particular option AFAIK is limited to proprietary NVidia drivers. Others
to force a particular DPI via xorg.conf need to use DisplaySize.
http://fm.no-ip.com/share/DisplaySize contains sizes designed to produce
particular (multiple of 4) DPI results for many resolutions.
