[opensuse] KDE4.4 and using USB headset for all system sounds

What is the "right" way to redirect all system sounds to a USB headset
when it's plugged in? (using KDE4.4 and openSUSE 11.2)
I can easily configure apps such as Skype and Ekiga to use the
headset... that's not much of a problem.. but what about say...
Firefox. Assume I.m play YouTube vids, and need ot push the audio
through the USB headset. How do I do this?
At one point when I plugged in a USB headset, I got a popup asking if
I wanted the headset to be the default device. I answered No at the
time... shoudl I have answered Yes?
Other possibilities... using Configure > Multimedia ? OK, but what in
that list is "enough" to push sound through the headset? Is it enough
to just prefer the USB headset on all options?
The extra difficulty in this equation is, this is all on a laptop with
a fresh install of 11.2 upgraded to KDE4.4 and then... remote where I
cannot log into the machine, and the person using the laptop is not
all that computer knowledgeable.
Is there some "simple" way to achieve this? Plug in the headset and
all sound is directed through the headset.. unplug it and it defaults
back to teh speakers with no user interaction.... or is this still a
pipe dream?
