[opensuse] DVD problems

Two DVD's installed in a Fry's computer, unknown mobo.
First one (sd0) set as master, second one set as slave.
YaST hardware detect shows drives as
CD-ROM
CD-RW SOHR-5239V (/dev/sr0)
DVD Writer 1040F (/dev/sr1)
I am reasonably certain that the first drive is a DVD also.
Is there any way to tell?
I was unable to install SuSE 11.1 from sr0, but it installed
OK from sr1. (It didn't recognize sr0, apparently.)
Could not play commercial CD music from either drive. The
speaker icon in the taskbar is set to about 3/4. Now disk
is in /dev/sd0.
I do not understand the "Configure Media Device box in
Amarok, with its Pre-connect command and Post-disconnect.
I thought audio disks did not have to be mounted or
umounted. KMix says Alsa driver is used. Big hum from
speakers, but no sound. All the controls on the
mixer are at near maximum. It does not appear that
the disk is even turning. Also, it says the artist
is somebody called Mstthias Ettrich, which it is not.
I can bring up a window that says "device doesn't have
read permissions on this account Check the read
permissions on this device." Where and how do I do that?
(I am in user mode,)
Thanx for any help. I've been around Linux for years, but I'm
still snowed most of the time.
