[opensuse] How to change group ownership of /var/log/messages

Hi all. I use the tail widget on KDE4 to keep a watch on /var/log/messages.
This file is normally readable only by root.

My normal user account is a member of the wheel group and if I chgrp
/var/log/messages to wheel then I can monitor it on the desktop, however this
change does not survive a reboot (or syslog rolling over the file) because
every time the file is created it is created as root:root instead of
root:wheel.

Is there a way to tell the system to use the wheel group instead of root for
/var/log/messages? I tried setting SYSLOG_NG_PARAMS="-g wheel" in
/etc/sysconfig/syslog and then restarting syslog but this still reset the
group ownership to root.

Thanks,
Rodney.
