a) Start Firefox from an xterm/konsole/gnome-terminal (etc.). Mail what
_errors_ you get. Or look in your X log. As a wild guess I'd say
there's an incompatible addon/extension that causes the crash. So,
try with a pristine user or rename your ~/.mozilla (or just a
subdir of that, don't know what directory the current FF uses).
Tell, what extensions/addons you have installed.

b) you might consider using Seamonkey (as you use both Firefox and
Thunderbird), they share a lot of code.

c) FYI, there is also a german mailing list

don't want to use seamonkey
can't use extensions
if I have to I'll go back to 3.5 that works fine
I been trying to fined for months now what's going on
