No it's not that useless. For instance as his setup uses
/dev/disk/by-id, the device symlinks should be the same as we try to

Yep.

He could try to boot 11.3, and there chroot the old 11.2, in order to reinstall grub. I'm not sure
exactly how, but I would first try YaST (11.2 yast).
