Nope:

but remember, this is KDE3...

Ahhh, sorry. So everything works as expected which means Firefox cannot
set itself as default browser on KDE3. It only sets it in GConf for you
which obviously has no effect for KDE applications (it has for apps like
Thunderbird though).
