not a KDE problem...
Do you get your users via network nis, ldap whatever? Could be that kdm
pops up before all users are available.
So maybe login fails because you try too early rather because it's the
first try.
You could check whether your problem also happens if you don't start
services in parallel.

I see that problem too and I don't use anything like nis, ldap etc.
