I came across a strange issue on openSUSE 12.1. I can delete any items
on the desktop or inside any folders just by selecting and hitting the
delete button of the keyboard. What could be the problem?

I assume you "cannot" delete items?

You are not owner
permissions are wrong on /home/<user>
/home/<user>/Desktop
