Linux now but since I moved to Finland, it struck me... How do I type combined
chars like éêë or ü under Opensuse 12.1

Under Windows and OSX, you type e.g. ´ and then e. On the Finnish keyboard
there is a " button at the place where the ü is on the German keyboard, but
it's not actually a " button. It is meant to create Üü by first pressing the
button and then pressing Uu but again, similar to the ´ ` key, it immediately
creates a " when you press it.

So how do I type those combined chars?

I asked the same question a few months ago and I was directed to use a compose key, which I find very useful. Here are 2 URLs that describe the compose key and how to map it:

In KDE 4.7, under System Settings -> Input Devices -> Keyboard -> Advanced Tab, you can select which keys to use as a compose key. I use the left and right microsoft keys, and then a combination of keystrokes to make the different characters, like these:

è from compose key, `, and e
ü from compose key, ", and u
â from compose key, ^, and a
ñ from compose key, ~, and n
æ from compose key, a, and e

There are several combinations that are built into the compose key functionality once you set it up.

Also in that same area for the keyboard under the layouts tab, you can install a Finnish keyboard or many other languages.
