Download it from java.com and run the installer. Apparently that's the
only way Oracle permits it to be distributed now.

Not in my experience.

No, but you may need to adjust some environment variables to get the
version of Java to run that you need to.
Does it

In my experience, yes - otherwise I wouldn't have suggested it. :)
