[opensuse] Master Document help, new territory for me

I need to create a Master Document. I'm only vaguely familiar with this
feature, and though I have been reading the official documentation I
don't feel very enlightened on this topic. I'm overwhelmed with trying
to understand and apply these concepts. Up to present I've only had
limited use for word processing. Maybe the documentation isn't clear for
a beginner... or as likely my brain is just fried.
The scenario is that I need to assemble a revision to a specific plan,
for a specific plan amendment. This is a 200+ page document divided into
topical sections, with page numbering relative to each 'chapter' as
opposed to universally across the document. As we are amending the
original, adding and removing parts as well as rearranging things the
ability of the master document to create an Index dynamically is vital.
The sections have subsections, and further subsections to that. There
are also tables, exhibits, and maps which will need their own indexes.
I need to know at least the following:
How do I have the Index correctly list the Sections and then their
divisions in a heirarchical way?
How do I create index-able headers?
How can I copy and paste text from the PDF without it making a hideous
mess of the formatting? (weird returns, etc.)
Can I link in a PDF file to the Master Document, so that it can be
printed in the final? (The maps etc. are in PDF)
If a document is submitted, can I restyle it with a template so it
matches the rest of the document?
I'm sorry if this all seems terribly obvious to you, but this is an
awful lot to learn, and I only have two weeks to finish this project.
