[opensuse] Very strange thunderbird behavior

A couple of weeks ago, I did a Yast2 update of my 12.1 system. Thunderbird was updated to v12. thought I saw some strange behavior, but was away for awhile.
Sometimes my emails show up in the message list. Sometimes they don't, but I can see them if I click on the 'unread' button. More annoying is that, frequently, the Inbox shows 1 message, and the 'unread' button shows something with no title or text and a data of 12/31/1969. It does not delete, but I can move to Trash or Junk. Later, I get it again. I have tried deleting the Inbox.msf file and letting TBird recreate it; and also compressing the folder. Eventually, the weird message comes back again.
There were some other problems along the way, but I seem to have gotten past them. I reinstalled the previous 11.0.1 version; it had other problems and was worse.
Mail comes into /var/spool/mail/<name> and I use 'movemail' to get it into thunderbird. (I am the only one on the computer). I have not seen a bugzilla or any message on the web about this situation.
What to do?
