Apple are due to move to intel x86-type chips, away from the PowerPC chips they currently use in their computers. There will probably be lots of news about this at the forthcoming MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. So don't make a decision for a couple of weeks. That said, how linux will fare on the new machines, nobody knows yet.

If you do get a PowerPC mac, well, it's been a long time since I used Ubuntu on it. Graphics worked fine, out of the box, but there was no flash, and a few other (minor) apps missing. As far as I know (I'm not a gamer) there isn't a linux ppc version of UT, but there is an OS X native version. I think all the codecs for restricted formats exist for linux ppc.
