Well, soon you'll be able to play with i86 Linuxes _and_ with Apple's
gorgeous GUI ;-). Maybe you'll find your new place with the Core Duo
laptop :-)

As for the matter at hand, check out your "Composing" preferences
under: Mail - Preferences (command-comma).

You can set the default format of ALL your e-mails to either Rich Text
or Plain Text.

If you're happy with the current state of affairs, you can also choose
a much more specific option from the responding preferences section of
"Composing":

Use the same message format as the original message (Respond using
Rich or Plain Text)

As for spel cheeking, I don't use Mail enough to have noticed its
behaviour on that front.

Short answer: I don't know. Long answer: most e-mail lists do filter
"rich text" (HTML) messages but usually you don't have to worry about
that yourself -- it'll happen automatically if the list does so.
