Just because sound doesn't work for you and a few other people doesn't mean that sound doesn't work for some guy and few others in Windows. I've only ever known sound to be excellent in both.

The only time I've ever had problems with sound under Linux was when Creative Labs refused to release the midi chipset specifications for the Soundblaster Live! so that I had to use timidity to play midi files. They had some sort market driven justification for only supplying midi software for Windows for those cards.
