wireless pointer needed

I've installed a D-Link 520G PCI wireless card in my system. It's got an
Atheros chipset. I can do a modprobe ath_pci, and that works.
But... I can't access ath0, or bring it up. If I boot off the SuSE live
CD, it's got no problem. I found a note to the effect online that I
should edit /etc/modprobe.c/alias, and add
alias ath0 ath_pci
Did that, did the modprobe ath_pci, but no joy.
Ok, I'm sure this has been covered, so if someone can point me to a site...
Thanks in advance.
