You can also extract the contents in a folder and copy the folder to
/usr/share/gdm/themes..Then open Login screen setup from
System->Adminstration and select the theme you want !

Hmmm, strange. Normally all you need to do is drag and drop the tar.gz
file into the Theme Preference Windows. Is it what you did ?
