Re: How to create a custom install CD for a DNS appliance, "Powered by Ubuntu"

Take a look at Mondo Rescue (www.mondorescue.org). It's a backup
system,
but one of its features is the ability to make a set of ISO images
that
can be used to do a bare metal restore.

The problem with that is it is unlikely to work if the target
hardware
is not identical to the source hardware and/or configuration.

He's talking appliance - so he specifies the hardware too.
And Mondo can handle quite a lot of on-the-fly changes, it depends
on
how different the target is to the original.

Thanks for the responses. I probably shouldn't have used the word
"appliance", because I want this OS to run on any type of hardware. I
would like it to perform the same hardware detection that Ubuntu
normally does when you install from CD. The Ubuntu OEM install is very
cool, but I want it to allow me to create an install CD of the modified
system.

The reason I called it an appliance is because I want this
pre-configured server to serve a very specific purpose, to be a DNS
server (possibly DHCP as well). This would include the DNS/DHCP
services installed and running, along with a web-based GUI to manage
each service. Add some documentation on the desktop and you have a very
simple and easy to use DNS/DHCP server. If we can make an install CD
for a modified Ubuntu, I can imagine dozens of single-purpose servers
that could be created, all "Powered by Ubuntu".
