Scim in Dapper

Hi,
I'm trying to test Chinese input support in Dapper.
Installing works perfectly and installs scim with all the relevant packages. Nevertheless, although scim is installed, I can't use it to input text in gedit (doesn't even shows in the input method selection that pops up after a right-click) or Open Office, nor (as it seems) into any other application.
Before I report a bug, can anyone point me to any step I did wrong and/or explain me the method to solve this problem?
I know it should only need a few lines in ~/.gnomerc, but I'm trying to keep Dapper clean of any personal configurations so my tests and bug reports would be relevant. If I'm missing an easy mouse-selectable option, then there's nothing to report now.
Cheers,
Loïc
