It's a miracle. Just got the chance to boot the recalcitrant box up today,
and it did not drop to the package installer. It booted into Kubuntu, just
like I'd prayed for. Thanks to all for your help.

(Perhaps sacrificing that ream of paper to Osi (Egyptian Goddess of
Networking) really did work this time.)
