Currently we have forums using phpbb but I don't like them because I
don't understand phpbb as well. Also, I've heard that there are security
problems with phpbb.
Yeah, I got tired of manually upgrading each of the MANY phpBB
security updates. Also I found that to get some basic features you
needed to install mods.
But I've found a wonderful free piece of forum software Simple Machines Forum:

I would use the 1.1 RC2 version of SMF. It's rock solid for me, looks
better, and has some really nice features:
