D-Link DWL-G630 WiFi Card

Hello all,
I am running Ubuntu on a live CD on a hp pavilion ze4600 laptop.
I was really happy to see the both lights on my D-Link DWL-G630 light up when I
booted the CD, but I was unable to actually login.
I read on the forum that a D-Link DWL-G650 works with out any effort, I am
assuming the 630 isn't far behind.
The dmesg output was cryptic, mostly talking about IPv6.
I used the configuration tool, supplying the obvious answers. First I tried
DHCP, but it failed to make a connection; the WiFi router log showed no
communication.
I then tried a static connection using the MS XP gateway command output. For
gateway I tried both my interface IP address as well as the wifi router's
address.
I found configuration information online for an older version of Ubuntu, and
used that as much as I could.
Any ideas ?? Thanks in advance.
John van V.
