I can't seem to find the bugs you reported about this in Launchpad. Havethey been fixed in Dapper already?
The "bugs" in this case is the absence of "RubyGems" -- which is in
Launchpad. Basically what's in the repos is out-of-date so using Ruby from
distro and downloading Gems just left everything a mess. Once you got Gems
working at all, using the stuff you downloaded from it had a 50/50 chance of
blowing up.
It's just easier to build from source. The repos just don't (and, to be
fair, can't) keep up with the stuff that's going on in Ruby.
