Okay. That was a bad move. Don't reboot!
Never done this, but try reinstalling the linux-image package.
Not the metapackages, but the kernel package itself looks like:
"linux-image-2.6.15-23-686" or something similar.
I believe synaptic has a "mark package for reinstallation" option.
