Edgy Eft (current packages) -- Starting/stopping services, error "chdir: No such file or directory"

Here is an example of the problem:
# /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
chdir: No such file or directory
* Restarting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd
chdir: No such file or directory
[ ok ]
Any suggestions how I can fix this? I have Googled
about for some clues, but nothing is presenting itself.
