Dapper install CD won't run on my AMD64 (was: Lots of Dapper Problems)

I ended up just re-installing Ubuntu on my laptop from a Dapper CD.
This solved all my issues- I'm more interested in having at least one
working machine than in tracking down problems.
Unfortunately, I still can't get my desktop (the homemade AMD64) to
boot from the Dapper install CD. I've tried:
- the regular desktop CD (i386)
- the alternate CD (i386)
- the regular desktop CD (AMD64)
- using the debian-installer/framebuffer=false kernel option
- using the noapic and nolapic kernel options
- safe graphics mode
- combinations of these
The one approach I haven't tried is the alternate AMD64 install. I'll
try that if no one can come up with other suggestions.
Any more ideas on this? Mario Vukelic's link suggests that this isn't
a video-related problem. The consistency checkers all indicate that
the CD is OK. I'm not sure what the problem is here.

Glad you got one step further

They are, but I'd have it easier if I got an answer to my other
question :) Did you follow the instructions in the DapperUpgrade notes,
especially regarding making sure that (k,x)ubuntu-desktop is installed
before upgrading?

I don't think really

There are commercial support options on the Ubuntu homepage somewhere,
but I don't think that's what you're asking
I guess via bug reports, but before filing one you should make sure you
followed the instructions in the upgrade notes

To me, his might hint to erroneous upgrade procedures
(DapperUpgrades? :) or a bug in Dapper you trigger for some reason

Just to be sure: installed (k,x)ubuntu-desktop before doing that?
As another poster has noted, aptitude might be a better option than
apt-get, since it is much better at resolving dependencies.
Also, upgrading via System/Administration/Update Manager (as explained
in the upgrade notes) seems to be safer. Many people seem to have
problems doing it the CLI way. For me it went smooth though, but I
upgraded before the Flight CDs came out.
I don't know if there is a way to force Update Manager to retry now,
after the CLI approach has already failed.

I'd think your hunch looked pretty good, had I not googled this:
http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/ATI/Radeon9xxx
Did you use the Desktop CD or the Alternate Install CD? If not the
second, it might be worth a try since it needs no X to install
