Do you have either the gxine or mplayer plugins installed? (type in
"about:plugins") I was encountering constant and frequent spontaneous
crashes with these plugins installed, even on pages with no
audio/video content. I never determined exactly which one of these was
the culprit, but removing them both solved the problem.
I have the same problem and i didn't think about mplayer plugin until now. The strange think is that firefox crash even if there is no media on the loaded pages. It can be also the macromedia flash plugin, witch is very buggy.


At the moment,
I use the vlc plugin, which works fine.

FWIW, I am running ubuntu on a 686 system.
