It's actually an option during a normal boot. Hit ESC at the Starting
GRUB prompt and select memtest86 from the menu:
From the installed /boot/grub/menu.lst:
title Ubuntu, memtest86+
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/memtest86+.bin
boot
