Re: suitable kernel for amd64

Felipe Alfaro Solana wanted us to know:

Currently, I am running kernel-image-2.6.15.25-386 on my laptop with with AMD
Turion64 X2 processor. This kernel is per default shipped with
Ubuntu6.06 to make it work on any x386 processor. It, naturally, does
not support dual processors.

If you want support for two processors do:

sudo apt-get install linux-686-smp (this kernel does support SMP)

Well, I am a bit confused after your suggestion. I thought
linux-image-2.6.15.x-686 were meant to be specified for PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/PIV
Processors.

If you want full 64-bit support, download the Ubuntu Linux
distribution for AMD64 processors. This distribution comes with a
64-bit kernel for your machine.

No, I don't want 64-bit support. It won't pay off for me. But I want
dual processors support.

Question) Is the k7 linux-image from Ubuntu just a normal kernel-image
or does Ubuntu patch it's kernels before releasing?

Regards,
