Because Debian (and therefore Ubuntu for that matter) doesn't use /opt
for nothing. Some third party packages *might* install themselves
there. But "official" debian/ubuntu packages will not install anything
there:
dpkg --search "/opt/*"
will give you nothing.
installer ... there is indeed no package that ships the empty /opt dir
so dpkg wont show up anything with a -S, but if you use ltsp in ubuntu
you need to run ltsp-build-client which installs all the client parts
in /opt/ltsp which is the default location for this files since ltsp
exists ... we didnt want to change that due to possible documentation
inconsistences and since debian adoped our ltsp packages for etch (i
think there is also a sarge backport) there are packages that
*need* /opt but dont ship it themselves... one exception is edubuntu
where the above command is run from the installer so there you will even
have a prefilled /opt/ltsp/$ARCH dir.
