Right, I forgot that. I found no solution to this problem. The docs seem
to say that one can set different solutions for the external and
internal display, but it didn't work for me. I worked around it by
creating a new user and set up the desired resolution from the System >
Preferences menu. Then I put the user in the same groups as the main
user (System > Administration). When I need the external resolution I
make a second login from gdm using this user.
The free ati driver behaves better in this regard for me too
