It's a problem specifically to do with the Jmicron SATA/PATA interface
which is used on many motherboards which have the Intel 965 chipset.
The Intel chipset doesn't have a PATA (i.e. old fashioned IDE)
interface at all so the JMicron chipset is added to provide a PATA
interface. The JMicron PATA interface doesn't have drivers in the
kernel except in the very latest (2.6.18) kernel. Ubuntu have patched
the drivers into the 2.6.17 kernel in Ubuntu 6.10 beta.
Ahhhhhh - it becomes clear now. Also, I'd not realised that the motherboard
didn't have a "real" IDE interface... I'll reconsider my purchase. Thank
you! :)
I've ordered a SATA DVD/CD drive to overcome the problem. The Intel
SATA interface works well with most reasonably new Linux kernels if
you turn AHCI on in the BIOS.
Bugger me - didn't know you could get them! Either way, I don't want to get
rid of my nice Plextor burner just because it's on an IDE interface so I'll
be looking for an alternative
