Ahhhhhh - it becomes clear now. Also, I'd not realised that the

Ubuntu 6.10 which arrives on 20th October should work OK "out of the
box" with motherboards that use the JMicron PATA interface for IDE
drives. Certainly the 6.10 beta seems to work OK.

The Abit AB9 Pro will still have an issue with its Realtek 8138
network interfaces though, these will need a kernel module to be
compiled to get them to work with Linux. I've overcome this for the
moment on my system by putting an old[ish] NIC into one of the PCI
slots.

I've ordered a SATA DVD/CD drive to overcome the problem. The Intel
SATA interface works well with most reasonably new Linux kernels if
you turn AHCI on in the BIOS.

Bugger me - didn't know you could get them! Either way, I don't want to
get rid of my nice Plextor burner just because it's on an IDE interface so
I'll be looking for an alternative

There's a small premium for SATA CD/DVD drives but it's not much. You
can get Plextor SATA drives now.
