untar it.

Thanks, just did that! It seems to work so far, and I checked that the
help browser (Yelp) still works, and it does.

So.. so far so good I guess. Though this now won't be updated with
security fixes though I think?

If you install it in your home directory you'll own it and you can then
set it to check for updates in the preferences section.

You'll actually see updates much quicker than with the Ubuntu version
this way.
