Amarok and other sound problems

No sooner have I got my Firefox/RealPlayer combination playing properly
through my headset than other problems arise.
I upgraded to Kubuntu Edgy this past weekend and there have been a lot of
gremlins with sound.
The latest is that when Amarok starts up it reports
xine was unable to initialise any drivers
If I change the Engine settings it will sometimes work but it will play
through the inbuilt soundcard only, not through the Plantronics USB headset.
Although to make things interesting, just once in while it will work as
expected.
Under Gnome I could set the headset as default soundcard - I can't seem to
find a way of doing this in KDE.
All help appreciated, as ever.
Rosie
