I do not like Microsoft but I still use XP and ME because I have nothing
else that works. I use Ubuntu Edgy on a dual boot Dell laptop and would
love to delete XP but not until I find a solution to the problem. Does
anyone have a solution to this problem that one who is not an expert on
Linux could use?
If it doesn't work, google on whatever the wireless hardware is in your
computer. So boot into windows if you have that and check that the
driver/ manufacturer is.
A very useful tool on Ubuntu is 'wifi-radar' it scans for wireless
networks and shows the details to you. If this works then you know
wireless networking is working and it's just a matter of setting the
right ESSD and encryption stuff.
On my laptop (NEC) it 'just-worked'. It uses built in Intel
PRO/Wireless 2200BG hardware. Another laptop we have is HP, has the
exact same hardware and that also just-worked.
NOTE: Believe it or not, it only started working after noticing there
actrually is a button on the thing that turns wifi on or off. On the HP
this is an external button, on the NEC it's a Fn-key something
combination. On both computers the status LED does NOT come on, but
the wireless network does. :)
