Hi there;

However, when I ran startkde --display :1 , I couldn't run kde in the nested

get a rudimentary kde desktop running but not the kdm login screen, as --display
is not a valid option for kdm.
fast answer as I haven't tried this so far: I suspect that startkde is
just a wrapper script to get all of the KDE components up and running in
a pleasant way - and, doing so, possibly ignores the --display command
line option.
Instead of using -- display, try setting the DISPLAY environment
variable in some terminal before doing startkde there:
export DISPLAY=:1 && startkde
