I don't understand networking or aliases, and my brief googling is

stuff that I don't understand more than I do. I'd really like to know
a) if I should even concern myself with the host alias

b) if so, how do I remove/edit the host alias lists from my
computer.

The other day, while pfutzing around in System/Administration/Network
Settings/Hosts....
(I was *just* looking!), I noticed the Aliases column to the right of
the IP Address column
for 127.0.0.1 seemed blurred, or overwritten, so I clicked on the handy
Properties button...

What I could see was a comparatively long-ish list of aliases that I
don't particularly
recognize, e.g.:
[snip domain list]

My guess is you've installed some kind of advert/tracker blocking
software that's added certain domains to localhost aliases. (By aliasing
the domains to localhost the requests don't reach the servers.)

Thank you for your reply, both for jogging my memory, and for the explanation of
one of the functions of aliasing to localhost! I wish I had some sort of google
ability with my danged memory. I *had* installed a script (see below) a few
weeks back.

Have a look in /etc/hosts and post some of the output here.
