First, thanks, Brian, for getting me thinking.
I obviously did something in the wrong order to get things broken.
Regardless, once my brain started working again, it seemed that - for
whatever reason - the php modules weren't being loaded. OK, that list is
in /etc/apache/modules.conf. When I looked, sure enough there was no
command to load php4. I added the line
LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so
(after looking to make sure it was there). After I restarted apache, php
was working.
