Nobody commented on this yet but IMHO it's worth pointing out, so here I
go: when you are prompted when opening administrative applications from
the menus, you are *not* asked for the root password. You are asked to
repeat the password of the user under whose name you are logged in.

The user "root" is disabled by default in Ubuntu.

The first user you create on the machine when installing automatically
has administrative rights; those can be configure in menu
System/Administration/Users and Groups.
