Perhaps this is too obvious and you have already tried, but...

A long time ago I had a problem with sound not working on a Debian box
and it turned out to be a simple matter of the correct audio channels
not being turned up. To check this out run alsamixer or alsamixergui
(type it in at the terminal) and try moving some of the channels up
and seeing if you get sound.
