Hello,
I have a newb/dummy question. I have a PC that has an Intel Pentium D
950 processor (running @ 3.4 GHz.) According to Intel docs, it is
EM64T capable and it has two cores.
Yes, it is capable of running the amd64 port of Ubuntu.
The question is this: is this processor better suited for the 64 bit
edition of Ubuntu?
Depends on your chosen tasks. If it's a server that won't be used for
youtube or multimedia, then going 64bit might be nice. If you're
planning to use it as a desktop, though, then I'd say you should stick
with 32bit.
I don't think you'll see much overall performance benefit by going
64bit, and you'll lose a lot of desktop functionality (flash, real,
w32codecs, skype). Of course there are ways around these problems, but
it's a lot of pain for little or no benefit, in my opinion.
Of course, you can dual boot or use dchroot to have both installed and
running at the same time.

Amit.
