Re: live CD 7.04 - how to save settings between sessions?

I will install the stable 7.04 as soon as it comes out, but until then I

rm .mozilla/firefox/b4k2cpyh.default/Cache/*
tar -czf home.tar.gz \
bin \
.evolution \
.mozilla \
.ssh \
.gnome2_private/Evolution \
backup.sh

Firefox is saved pretty well. The problem is, in Evolution I need to
recreate the account every time I boot the live CD again. Some settings
are preserved, but not all and the account definitely needs to be
created again.
Also, would be nice to save Gnome panel applets, Gnome settings and
stuff like that.

Should I just save the entire home directory?
Is there a more elegant solution?

Hey, cool script!

I did the whole home dir backup-before-upgrade at first - worked like a
charm when going from 5.10 to 6.06, and then to 6.10. Both times I did a
whole new install. When you're ready to upgrade to 7.04 for real, you
may decide to do what I did this time instead, which was to use this:

update-manager -c -d

Worked fine, and no ill effects so far. I did end up having to carefully
note which packages to reinstall, but that's very easy, as it will show
you a screen full of stuff it's going to uninstall, which you can just
copy into a file. Later, go through that file and install the latest
versions of all that stuff. Fini.

Note that I did still backup my home dir of course - I just ended up not
needing the backup when I was done. :-)
