Re: openGL crashes

Interesting...
The problem surfaced for me as well when I installed Beryl (on Edgy) and then
persisted after I uninstalled. However, I also noticed it on a test install
of Feisty which did not have Beryl (unless it was installed by default, I
didn't check). I had the crash when I demo'd an Xscreensaver module, which
I'm pretty sure now was openGL.
I have an ATI video card, but haven't checked the X log file.
In any case, I simply stopped using Xscreensaver and haven't had a problem.

Hi Paul,
Let me recapitulate what happened:
1) I installed Beryl and few updates on my machine, before which
everything was working fine. My setup is:
Ubuntu (Edgy, 32-bit)
AMD Turion X2 (64 bit)
NVidia GeForce Go 6150
NVidia driver version 1.0-9746
2) openGL apps would crash the X server immediately. A black screen with a
blinking cursor would hang around for a while, after which the login
screen would come up.
I am not sure whether it was Beryl or the updates that messed up the
system. I suspect it was Beryl, but if other people are facing the same
problem then it could be the updates. I do not know which updates were
installed.
3) I uninstalled Beryl, but the problem persisted.
4) I reinstalled MESA libraries, after which the apps started working.
They would run for more than 10 minutes though. I was playing around with
Blender which would crash unpredictably.
5) Steve Flynn suggested I look at the X log. In the log I found this
message:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): If you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.
I reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers, and all's well now. I am still not sure
what had caused the problem.
Thanks,
Niraj

OK, so what's happened. Why is openGL causing system crashes recently?
Has
there been an up?date?
Paul
After that I tried reinstalling the nVIDIA drivers, and now it all
works--no more crashes!

Hi again,
I sent a mail earlier mentioning that Blender was crashing for me. I
then
figured out that the problem was common to all openGL applications.
Every
time a screensaver (or any openGL) application starts, the X servers
crashes, and I land up on the login screen.
Like I mentioned, I ran the Update Manager yesterday, after which
this
problem has started to crop up. I also installed Beryl at the same
time
too, and subsequently removed it. The problem persists.
Can someone tell me how I can find out the source of the problem?
What's in your X log?
