only thing that I needed to do was to set my preferences to use the
ffmpmeg codecs for both video and audio.

Could you explain how to do this?

Applications|Sounds & Video|Mplayer
right click on the Mplayer screen then select Preferences
Video codec family: FFmpeg...
Audio code family: FFmpeg...

You can also download & install the codecs directly from:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

Scroll down to Binary Codec Packages then select the appropriate one for
your system/language. Download untar then follow the instructions in the
README file.

In order to determine that you
don't have a damaged file let's start with a common one; can you

using something a bit more cheerful,
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ

I downloaded the .flv and *blush* it plays ok with mplayer.

That works just fine for me. (cool video btw :-)

*However* I maintain that I'm not entirely stupid, because the file I want to
play *has played ok* on a debian box, but not on my kubuntu one. And as this
was the second .flv I had tried to play without success, I do think there's
something up.

The one that won't play is a UK comedy series catch-up, downloaded from
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoID=2016303818
(sorry, it's quite a large file)

I get the same errors + I get sound but no video.

I used the all-in-one bookmarklet from
http://1024k.de/bookmarklets/video-bookmarklets.html

I tend to avoid adding things to my browsers (with the exception of the
Mozilla Preferences Toolbar), so I used:

http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

The key error that I notice is:

libavformat file format detected.
[flv @ 0x874c3c8]Unsupported video codec (4)

However when I play the Vista vs Linux video I get:

libavformat file format detected.
VIDEO: [FLV1] 320x240 0bpp 25.000 fps 0.0 kbps ( 0.0 kbyte/s)

to download it. From the terminal, I get the attached.

Thank you!

rich

I'll try from my feisty system later... currently trying to figure out
an OpenOffice/Java/Nautilus problem
(http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6510610) so it may
be awhile before I can try.

The good news: you *can* play an flv on Mplayer
The bad news: you can't play UK comedy (then again, maybe that's not
such bad news after all... :-)
