Unfortunately I'm not sure what else to suggest. In mine I have:

OSS Mixer: Speaker
Alsa Mixer: PC Speaker

On laptop & desktop systems.

Volume applet on Edgy is 2.16.1, on Feisty it is 2.18.0 & on Dapper
2.14.3 - all have a speaker adjustment. Perhaps trying
System|Preferences|Sound will help if you compare the laptop settings
against your desktop settings.
